What To Give Dogs For Fireworks

Updated: Dec 27, 2021

In simple terms, give your dog safety, comfort and training. The first two points are simple to address:

Keep Dogs Safe From Fireworks by:

  • being at home with them

  • keeping doors, windows & curtains/blinds closed from fireworks sounds and sights

  • never taking them out during fireworks; walk them before it goes dark on known fireworks events

  • if you don't have one already, create a haven or safe space for them inside the family home (bedding, a crate, it's their space away from where 'we' walk and it should be the place you see them go to to relax or move away from the 'action' of the household )

How To Comfort A Dog During Fireworks:

  • give them cuddles, treats, toys & plenty of attention to distract them

  • use TV and/or music to drown out the fireworks noises for dogs relief ( more details further down the post )

  • get them a fireworks /thunder jackets

  • research fireworks dogs medication but consult your vet first on your dogs suitability for prescription and non prescription medications like diazepam or melatonin etc

The third point, training, should stop dogs being scared of fireworks for life. Sound therapy for dogs does take your time and commitment but it can be done at home to fit around your schedule. Here's a link for some free fireworks training resources 👉 https://ffm.to/4debxk

If you are not confident, don't have the time or you have tried and your dog is not responding well, seek help from an accredited and respected professional dog trainer.

Radio Station For Dogs Fireworks

Although a radio station for dogs will drown out the fireworks noises, we have found a two-pronged approach is even better. When your dog is engaged with a TV show, not only is their sense of hearing distracted, but they are visually distracted from the scary sounds of fireworks too. As dog can't see what's happening on the screens of phones or tablets, you will need to play such videos on your TV. Their attention span is about 2-3 minutes but over the duration of long shows, they will reengage with the visuals multiple times: especially when 'prompted' by certain sounds.

Why Is My Dog Suddenly Scared of Fireworks?

This not uncommon. Anxiety can be triggered for a variety of reasons. However, as dogs get older, their anxiety caused by loud noises and fireworks can get worse. Like humans, dogs hearing deteriorates with age. As dogs hearing gets worse, they become less able to determine where a sound is coming from and this uncertainly to the location and proximity of loud, scary sounds feeds the stress and anxiety levels in dogs.
