How to find the right obedience class for your pet

Finding the right class for your dog is important not only so that you don't waste time and money but so that your dog doesn't suffer.

Shortlist

The first thing to do is to research a few different place and make a shortlist. The shortlist could be based on recommendations from friends, your vet and other dog related contacts as well as using the internet.

Credentials

Now that you have your shortlist, ask them all for their credentials. Any professional dog trainer will have accreditations from professional bodies and national associations to assure you that they themselves are actually trained and educated, and that they know how to train dogs properly. If they have no credentials, your shortlist just became shorter!

See For Yourself

When you are satisfied with their credentials, ask if you can sit in on a class or two. Not only will you be able to see the professional in action, you'll also be able to see the training environment as well as how many clients they have. You want your dog to enjoy both their instructor as well as their classmates! All of this will feed your gut instinct in making the right decision for your dog and your financial investment. If there are any alarm bells ringing, your shortlist will be even shorter!

Top Tips

Follow your gut instinct because your dogs needs to be comfortable with their instructor. On your visit so run a mile if you see any shouting, striking/hitting or any training techniques or equipment that looks like it could hurt or harm dogs.
